Solar power, with a side of hot running water

MIT researchers and their collaborators have come up with an unusual, high performance and possibly less expensive way of turning the sun’s heat into electricity. 

Their system, described in apaper published online in the journal Nature Materialson May 1, produces power with an efficiency roughly eight times higher than ever previously reported for a solar thermoelectric device — one that produces electricity from solar heat. It does so by generating and harnessing a temperature difference of about 200 degrees Celsius between the interior of the device and the ambient air.

The concept “is very radical,” says Gang Chen, MIT’s Carl Richard Soderberg Professor in Power Engineering and director of the Pappalardo Micro and Nano Engineering Laboratories, who co-authored the new paper with MIT doctoral student Daniel Kraemer and collaborators from Boston College and GMZ Energy. The work is funded by the Solid-State Solar-Thermal Energy Conversion Center, an Energy Frontier Research Center at the U.S. Department of Energy that is supported by MIT’s Materials Processing Center. 

While solar thermal electricity systems aren’t a new idea, they typically involve vast arrays of movable mirrors that track the sun and focus its rays on a small area. The new approach uses flat, stationary panels similar to traditional solar panels, eliminating the need for tracking systems. 

Like the silicon photovoltaic cells that produce electricity when struck by sunlight, Chen’s system is a solid-state device with no moving parts. A thermoelectric generator, placed inside a vacuum chamber made of glass, is covered with a black plate of copper that absorbs sunlight but does not re-radiate it as heat. The other side of the generator is in contact with ambient temperatures. Placed in the sun, the entire unit heats up quickly, even without facing the sun directly. 

The device requires much less material than conventional photovoltaic panels, and could therefore be much less expensive to produce. It can also be integrated into solar hot water systems, allowing the expenses of the structure and installation to serve two functions at once. Such solar water heaters are rarely seen in the United States, but are already a highly successful mass-market product in China and Europe, where they provide households with hot water and in some cases space heating as well. 

The materials used to build such solar thermoelectric generators, made through a nanostructured process, were developed jointly a few years ago in Chen’s lab at MIT and in co-author Zhifeng Ren’s lab at Boston College. Their teams have continued to work on improving these materials and integrating them into complete systems.

Chen points out that the U.S. Department of Energy has programs to develop thermoelectric systems, mostly geared toward harnessing waste heat from car and truck engines. He says that solar applications for such devices also can “have an important role to play” in reducing carbon emissions. “Hopefully we can prove that,” he adds.

Li Shi, associate professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, says this approach to solar power is “very novel, simple, and easy for low-cost implementation.” The efficiency level they have demonstrated so far, at 4.6 percent, is “already quite impressive,” he says. 

“With the use of other or new thermoelectric materials that can operate at a higher temperature,” Shi adds, “the efficiency may be improved further to be competitive with that for state-of-the-art amorphous silicon solar cells. This can potentially provide a different approach to realizing the $1-per-watt goal for solar-electricity conversion.” 

The new system wouldn’t be a substitute for solar photovoltaics, Chen says, but offers “another way” of tapping into the enormous amount of solar energy that bathes the Earth every day. And because it can be piggybacked onto the existing solar hot-water industry, the thermoelectric device could be a relatively inexpensive addition, with “no subsidies required,” Chen suggests. “It can be a game-changing thing,” he says.

Google покупает 49% немецкoй солнечной электростанции

Google покупает 49% немецкoй солнечной электростанции
Поисковый гигант объявил, что инвестирует 3,5 миллиона евро в солнечную электростанцию, которая будет запущена в Германии (предварительно сделка пройдет формальное одобрение регулирующими органами) энергетической компанией Capital Sage AG.
Электростанция расположится на 47 гектарах в Бранденбурге (на реке Хафель близ Берлина) и будет иметь пиковую мощность 18,65 МВт (то есть она станет одной из крупнейших в Германии электростанций такого типа).
Установка обеспечит электричеством более 5 000 домов в прилегающих областях. Для Google этот инвестиционный проект стал первым, который компания проводит за пределами США.

dies who will poke fun at me for this, I will always bring along every electronic device that I can fit in my pack. Gotta have the phone, the camera, and I’ve even been known to sneak a laptop on occasion. Problem is, the batteries are dead within the day and I inevitably regret the extra weight. The Alppac is for anyone like me. It uses a suspended load mechanism to produce an electrical charge when the user is walking. Plug in your phone, iPad, or any other electronic device and get a renewable, clean charge between stops.

Cellphone screens as solar panels

It takes about a total of six hours of outdoor light to completely charge a battery to full its capacity, while indoor light would take longer. While this is yet to come into production, the second-generation technology of Wysips promises to offer thirty minutes of talk time after just an hour of charging the phone.

If this does get into successful production, it would make wired chargers redundant. Wysips says it is already working with mobile display companies and phone manufacturers, to incorporate this technology into handsets and other mobile devices. It is a good thing that the film is ultra thin – less than 100 microns, and the film also does not interfere with the functions of a touch-sensitive smart phone. Plus, it is constantly drawing energy, unless of course the screen is covered. Hopefully, you will soon be able to charge on the go.

On a more rational note, this provides housing solution on waves and by doing so; it also reduces pressure on decreasing land resources across the globe. By moving our shelters on water via such floating houseboats that are autonomous and powered by green energy, we free up land that can be used for other purposes.

The design comes from Netherlands and the country is blessed with ample water bodies that remain stable and are perfect for houseboats. ReVolt House is equipped with a solar rooftop that allows you to power your entire home on solar energy alone. Obviously throwing in some wind power and maybe even some turbine power onboard will help it further on cloudy days as well. The home rotates along with the sun for passive heating needs and as it floats on water, temperatures always remain moderate.
The idea is to create colonies of such homes on water in the future so that pressure on land resources is reduced and alternate energy tapped into. This is one ultra-cool idea that we are all for and maybe we can try out a prototype soon!

One of the highest solar plants in the world to be installed in Tibet

One of the world’s largest producers of solar panels, Suntech Power Holdings Co.,Ltd. has finally unveiled its ambitious proposal to construct a 10MW solar installation in the Tibetan Plateau (Chek Kang village in the Sangri County, Shannan Prefecture). At a height of around 4000 meters, this project is already touted to be one of the highest solar power projects in the whole world.

CMU Robotics Institute’s initiated ChargeCar Electric Vehicle Conversion Project has successfully taken the ‘green’ step forward. With the help of researchers such as Illah Nourbakhsh of the institute’s Create Lab work, in collaboration with local mechanics, they are about to unveil a 2002 Civic EX four-door sedan that has been totally converted into an electric car.

The car’s conventional power train has been compensated with a 35-horsepower electric motor along with 33 lithium-iron-phosphate batteries in the trunk space. But converting the car is not the only aim of the project, they also wanted to make the car more power efficient and enhance battery life imbued with better AI. For example, the batteries were connected to a supercapacitor, which is a high-capacitance energy storage device. And artificial intelligence algorithms were used to regulate the energy drawn from batteries and stored in the supercapacitor.

According to CMU, the converted vehicle can spurt to a speed of more than 70 mph, with a range of 40 miles in high density zones. The cost will be a little on the higher side - around $17,000, but it is also expected to fall while the ‘green’ progression continues.

Kinetower - An intelligent skyscraper that can 'breathe


Advanced, ambitious and astute - these are the words that aptly describe this state-of-the-art conception of a skyscraper, conceived by Kinetura studio. Named as the Kinetower, this literally metamorphic structure will actually expand according to the intensity of sunlight!
The ‘vital’ outer facade of this building will be imbued with flexible yet intelligent exterior openings that can bloat and open up, depending upon the availability and intensity of natural sunlight, and thus acting as energy regulators. These ‘windows’ would be constituted of elastic, flexible yet hardy materials, which can readily and conveniently expand and compress accordingly. Though the required technology is still in development stage, nonetheless we would all eagerly wait for a deftly designed building to literally ‘breathe’ and ‘react’; in effect harmonizing with the surrounding climatic conditions.

It is always nice to see the spread of solar energy across the globe and using it as a replacement for conventional energy sources makes plenty of sense. In a world where the fossil fuel resources are depleting at a fast rate and carbon emissions becoming a rapidly growing nuisance, it is only logical that we turn to solar and wind power.
KYOCERA Solar Ltd have just provided US Marine Corps with their largest solar photovoltaic panel installation till date and it is something that the US armed forces are very proud of. The new installation set in United States Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, just north of San Diego, California will power on the base from now on with clean energy.

Using 6,300 KD235 modules, KYOCERA installed 226 photovoltaic panel units at the base over a used landfill, to ensure that land that was otherwise considered useless is also now involved in producing green energy. The installation is not just the largest of its kind in the US Marines, but will give them an opportunity to test out solar energy before other units can embrace it as well.

The Camp Pendleton’s installation is expected to generate 2,400 megawatt-hours of power annually and that should save them $ 336,000 on annual solar bills. So, obviously it will not be too long before the installation will make up for the initial costs of the panels. No doubt the armed forces can save on fossil fuel consumption in a huge way if they go green at more installations than one and companies like KYOCERA could help them in that attempt immensely.
